I’m used to answering it

I watched the BBC’s My Family at War tonight, of which there is a series running all week. It was about Rolf Harris and Kirsty Wark as they traced their ancestor’s steps in Northern France. I believe my great grandfather John Balfour served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in the Somme.

In the show which will be available on iPlayer tomorrowThe show which you can watch here, Harris talks about how his father never talked of the war. My great grandfather died when I was about 15 and I was told he’d never talked about his experience.

The closest I ever heard was when we went to France in the heatwave year of 1995 (or was it 1996?) he was shocked and appalled that we would want to go to such a horrific place. Harris, via War Records, found that his father’s tin hat (which had a shrapnel mark in the skull) did not show a glancing blow, but a wound which nearly ended his life. He saw the horrors that were caused by the huge underground explosions which helped break the trench warfare, at the cost of 10s of thousands of young lives in an instant.

As previously mentioned I consider my first car to be a fairly major step in the growing up/life process.

So this evening I’ve put together a mix tape for my first journey. Here it is!

The slow section begins…

Shine – Matt Redman

Anyone who knows me adequately well or is on my facebook friends list will know that I’ve been car hunting for the last few weeks. When Jonny Kirk and I went to do Route 66 we drove a beautiful Mazda 6 Sport 3 litre V6 which was a far more powerful car than either of us had ever driven before. Nevermind that Jonny informed me as we drove down I-405 in Los Angeles, CA that he hadn’t ACTUALLY driven any car on any road in four years and had never driven on a motorway… that was 3174 miles down the road.

Anyway, a nice 2003 Mazda 6 2.0 Diesel Sport was in Charles Hurst and stole my little heart for a few weeks, distracting me entirely from anything reasonable or sensible that might come my way. Until two nights ago when I found on autotrader a 2001 VW Golf GTi for the right price and turned out the insurance folks over at Equity (used to be McWhirters in Lisburn) decided to be awfully nice and give me four year’s no claims bonus despite never having my own comprehensive insurance. Quality.

So tomorrow morning I head to pick up the new vehicle, nice drive up to Bellaghy from Glengormley to spend and afternoon and hopefully not too long a night at Pete’s barn, making tea and toast and hoping that electricity supplies do not melt. Earnestly.

Ohh one thing I didn’t check – the sound system. Reminds me, I need to make my new car mix-tape. I feel it’s an epic moment that deserves such effort. To iTunes I go.

Also, turns out our internet is being disconnected today. Great. Haven’t even got our new connection details from O2 yet (cheap and appears cheerful, will review if otherwise. Sigh.

Boojum, Belfast’s Botanic Avenue Mexican restaurant have announced that on the 8th of October 2008 they are giving away Burritos for free, between midday and 4.00pm.

If you haven’t tried it, try it. It’s lovely. And I’d like free Mexican. Another review here.

This. Is. Not. Useful.

My house is old. And big. So wiring it with network cable would be a pain.  Wireless connections are fine, except when building walls are made of unknown quantities of unknown materials!

So this week while doing some work on a couple of websites during my err … bi-daily … distraction break I came across HomePlug, which I had heard of before. Basically it’s a technology that allows the electricity grid inside a house to be used as a range extender. You can have four APs out of one source signal, but what I’ve done is brought a wireless router acting as slave into my room, and creating a ‘new’ wireless network upstairs.

We picked up a new wireless modem router and access plug from Maplin. I recommend you give it a go, the fact that you can rip out the plugs and put them in other places without any configuration is bliss (Xbox in living room, why not!?)

p.s. Pete, this is the solution to your house’s problems… ;)
